1. Origins

The Lovers of the Holy Cross of Go Vap is one of the 24 religious congregations of the federation of the Sisters of the Lovers of the Holy Cross, which was founded by Bishop Pierre Lambert de la Motte in 1670 in the northern part of Vietnam. Eventually, the federation was officially established in 1902 by Bishop Alexandre Marcou in the diocese of Phat Diem, Vietnam. It is the first female religious congregation that embraces its East Asian characteristics and combines both contemplative community life and active ministry. The Sisters profess vows according to the constitutions and live in community with the mission to evangelize the non-Christians. They are under the jurisdiction of the local ordinaries.

In 1954 when the communists took over the North and Vietnam was divided into two parts, the Sisters migrated from the North into the South, and in 1956 they officially established themselves at Xom Moi, Go Vap which belonged to the Diocese of Saigon. After the communists gained control of the whole country of Vietnam in 1975, some of the Sisters once again left their convents and migrated to the U.S. Despite many difficulties and struggles in the beginning, the Sisters, by God’s providential care, were able to establish themselves once again under the name, “The Congregation of the Lovers of the Holy Cross of Los Angeles.”

2. Formation and Development

The formation and development of the Lovers of the Holy Cross of Go Vap in the U.S. began with Sr. Theresa Rose Trần Thị Hường, a member of the Lovers of the Holy Cross of Los Angeles, who had a strong desire to return to Vietnam to reconnect with the Lovers of the Holy Cross of Go Vap. Thus, in 2002, the superior general, Sr. Anna Nguyễn Thị Thanh officially readmitted Sr. Huong into the Congregation of the Lovers of the Holy Cross of Go Vap, according to article # 108 of the congregation Constitutions. Then, Sr. Huong was commissioned to live and minister in the Archdiocese of Seattle, WA. Together with three other sisters: Sr. AnnaTeresa Nguyễn Thị Hồng, Sr. Maria Nguyễn Thị Thùy Linh, and Sr. Mariana Nguyễn Thị Na, they established the first community at St. Monica Parish on Mercer Island.

In 2007, under the guidance and sponsorship of Archbishop Alexander J. Brunett, and with the collaboration of the parish administrator, Fr. Peter Hoàng Phượng, the Sisters officially committed themselves to the ministry for the Vietnamese Catholics of the Archdiocese of Seattle. From that time on, the congregation has become an official entity of the archdiocese. In 2014 it was recognized by the United States government as a non-profit organization.

In the same year, Bishop William E. Lori of the Diocese of Bridgeport, Conecticut invited the Sisters to come to minister to the elderly of the various nursing homes of the diocese, and at the same time serve the Vietnamese Catholic community at the cathedral.

In 2013 the Sisters were invited by Bishop Joseph A. Pepe of the Diocese of Las Vegas, Nevada, to come to minster to the sick and elderly of the diocese, as well as serve the Vietnamese Catholics at Our Lady of LaVang parish.

At the present time, 2020, the Sisters of the Lovers of the Holy Cross of Go Vap are ministering in 3 dioeces: the Archdiocese of Seattle, WA, the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT, and the Diocese of Las Vegas, NV.

7. Sr. Anna Phạm Thị Sáng is the current(2020) Superior General, serving in that position since November 26, 2018.

Following the spirit of our founder, Bishop Pierre Lambert de la Motte, the Sisters continue ministering to the people in American parishes and Vietnamese communities, in Catholic and public schools, and various hospitals and nursing homes. These ministries are being carried out in fulfilling the mission entrusted to their congregation in the areas of faith, morality, health, culture, and society advancement. They minister on behalf of and by the mandate of the universal Church, especially the local ordinary (Const. #72). At the same time, each sister is constantly invited to seek all possible ways to live a holy life according to the guidance, spirit, and charism which Bishop Pierre Lambert de la Motte had envisioned.

With great gratitude, the Sisters would like to thank the bishops, priests, benefactors, and superiors general of all past and present time, who have helped to build up a beautiful legacy for us to follow. Therefore, we lift up our grateful praise to God because “God’s love is forever.” (Ps 117)
